Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an ongoing condition affecting how your body processes blood sugar or glucose. Your body produces insulin to manage glucose, but when you have diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin or does not use the insulin it makes properly. Glucose builds up in your blood.

What are the types of diabetes?

Diabetes comes in two primary forms:

Type 1 diabetes

This type is due to your body's inability to produce insulin. It is typically associated with children.

Type 2 diabetes

This form is far more common and is caused when your body stops processing insulin correctly. You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, but it is more common over age 40.

How can I tell if I have diabetes?

You may hardly notice the warning signs of diabetes, or you may confuse your symptoms with something else. However, you may see these common symptoms with diabetes:

  • Intense thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme tiredness or fatigue
  • Blurry vision

You may also experience numbness, pain, and/or tingling sensation in your hands or feet.

How does having diabetes affect my health?

Diabetes puts you at risk for a range of health conditions, some quite severe. These include:

  • Heart disease, which may lead to heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Eye/ Visual problems like glaucoma and Cataract, which may lead to blindness
  • Nerve damage, which may lead to amputations
  • Skin disorders
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease and/or kidney failure, which may lead to lifetime hemodialysis.

That’s why it is best to visit the office of Dr. Kaw to manage your condition and safeguard your health.

How is diabetes diagnosed?

Dr. Kaw diagnoses diabetes with clinical examination and blood tests that analyze your glucose levels. He may recommend one of these tests:

  • Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test: You provide a blood sample to measure the share of blood sugar attached to hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen.
  • Fasting blood sugar test: You fast at least eight hours before providing a blood sample.
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: A 2-step blood test, taken after at least an 8-hour fasting and after a drink of a sugary liquid.

He discusses your testing options when you come in for a consultation. Blood tests may be conveniently available in an onsite lab.

How is diabetes treated?

Dr. Kaw tailors your treatment based on the type of diabetes you have. He generally recommends:

  • Lifestyle modification (i.e. weight management with diet and exercise, cessation of vices, etc.)
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Insulin
  • Oral medications
