Skin Care Q & A

What causes skin problems?

Aging, sun exposure, and your family history are among the factors affecting the appearance of your skin. As a result, you may experience acne or notice new moles or skin lesions that make you feel self-conscious.

The Retreat Medical Spa: Henry Kaw, MD, offers an array of skin care treatments to clear up your skin — to help restore your self-confidence.

What are the kinds of skin lesions?

Skin lesions come in many variations, including:

Skin tags

Skin tags are harmless fleshy growths that occur on your neck, eyelids, underarms, and elsewhere. Skin tags are common, and some grow big enough to be uncomfortable or bothersome.

Flat moles and freckles are types of macules. Macules are usually smaller than 0.4 inches in diameter.

Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a crusty, scaly growth. This type of skin lesion is caused by sun damage or UV exposure and mostly appears on the back of your hands or face.

How does skincare treatment remove lesions?

Skin lesion removal is a simple, quick process, with a few different options. Dr. Kaw recommends the right skin care treatment for you based on the type of lesion, its location, and size.

You may be an appropriate candidate for minor surgical removal or a procedure called electrocautery. Both are available at The Retreat Medical Spa: Henry Kaw, MD, in a quick, in-office treatment.

What is electrocautery?

Electrocautery is another name for thermal cautery. Dr. Kaw numbs your lesion first, then the heated electrode is then applied to living tissue to achieve varying degrees of tissue destruction. The entire skin care procedure is quick, usually under a minute.

How are skin tags removed?

Dr. Kaw discusses your options based on the size and location of your skin tag. He may recommend electrocautery or may remove it surgically. He numbs the treatment area, and you should experience minimal discomfort.

What are my skincare options for acne?

Depending on the type or severity of acne, Dr. Kaw might suggest a cream, lotion, gel, or soap to help achieve better skin.

Dr. Kaw can also treat surface acne with a skincare treatment called a chemical peel. Dr. Kaw applies a chemical solution to your skin, causing the damaged top layers of skin to peel away, revealing new, brighter skin underneath.

Types of chemical peels at The Retreat Medical Spa: Henry Kaw, MD, include:

  • Superficial or lunchtime peel: uses a mild acid to improve the appearance of slight skin discoloration
  • Medium peel: uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to help smooth away age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, and actinic keratosis
  • Deep peel: uses trichloroacetic acid or phenol remove moderate lines, age spots, freckles, and shallow scars
